APA/CFPe Diversity Summit - Thursday 25 June 2015 · 9am - 11am @ Plage Goeland, Cannes

Diversity—or the lack of it—in the advertising industry is a hot topic. What are the issues and how do we turn concern into effective action? That is the subject of the APA’s Diversity Summit in Cannes. We bring you thought-leaders and pioneers of transformative action. The people already changing our industry for the better.

They will address the key diversity issues: the lack of women in senior creative and management roles, and the lack of opportunity for people from ethnic minorities. The speakers will explore the benefits of a more diverse intake, drawn from the broadest possible talent base—better reflecting the population our industry actually advertises to.

2015 cfp-e/shots YDA: Call for Entries

The annual cfp-e/shots Young Director Award is a renowned (if we do say so ourselves) and established part of the Cannes Lions week. An event which has seen talented directors such as Ringan Ledwidge, Aleksander Bach and Hanna Maria Heidrich come to the fore as winners of the competition. But as with all things, it’s a case of evolve or die, and the YDA is evolving.

2015 will be its year of transition – more on which later – but fear not, there will still be a YDA event at the Cannes Lions Festival this year, and the competition is now open for entries. The list of categories and how to enter can be found here and the YDA is, as ever, looking to reward the cream of young international directing talent across a variety of platforms. The deadline for entry to this year’s competition is May 24.

This year there will be no ceremony at the Marriott hotel but a combined, if slightly curtailed, prize- giving followed by a lavish party that will take place at Long Beach, on the Croisette, on Thursday June 25 at 6.00pm.

As for the 2016 event, Francois Chilot, chairman of the YDA since its inception 17 years ago, has exclusively told shots that the time is right for the YDA to develop further.

“Over the course of this year we have been, and will continue to develop a new formula, ready for 2016,” says Chilot. “We are re-shaping the YDA using the basis of the last 17 years, not to change it, but to add to it. We will be encompassing all filmic means and platforms, apart from features, to better reflect the way that advertising itself has evolved. We want to allow the directors who enter the YDA to be able to express themselves and confront the challenges the three pillars (marketers, agencies and producers) of the communication industry faces.”

Meanwhile, the shortlist for the 2015 competition will be revealed on the YDA website, and on shot.net, week beginning June 15, with the winners being revealed week beginning June 22. Selected winner will also appear in shots magazine issue 158 and on the accompanying DVD.

Get ready, get set… We’re about to launch our Young Directors Award show with an official Call for Entries next Wednesday 15 April.  Ok, this will be a different version from our usual big splash in the hotel theatre – which will be returning even bigger and better with a new formula next year – but we will be celebrating the winners of our online competition with a lavish party at the Long Beach in Cannes in June. Stand by for more announcements next week.

World Producers Summit at Adfest

The World Producers Summit, which the CFPE organises with the APA and AICP, will be back at Cannes this year of course. The WPS is now well established at Cannes as the best opportunity for intelligence gathering about the production business.

Adfest is the popular Asian advertising festival, that takes place in Thailand every year and which this year, for the third time,  hosted to a World Producers Summit.

The photo shows some of the participants. It was an interesting session, getting the views on key production issues from producers from Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and other South East Asian countries.

CFPE Meeting in Istanbul

Our CFPE General Assembly in Istanbul was attended by nearly all (eighteen) CFPE members, where we discussed issues for our national association members, feedback on the CFPE events in Cannes- the Young Directors Award and World Producers Summit and planned forthcoming events. Both Cannes events were very successful, with the YDA drawing a capacity audience of 1,000 people to see excellent quality films from new directors. The WPS, which we host with the CFPE and APA, drew 110 production company owners from around the world to share intelligence on key production issues and new developments.

We looked at production issues across Europe and compared different markets and the CFPE adopted the standard NDA and pre PIBS (pre contract) documents created by the APA as standard European documents.

The meeting took place within the Crystal Apple, the leading Turkish advertising festival, and gave CFPE delegates the opportunity to participate in that festival too.

Many thanks for our hosts, the Turkish producers association, for their excellent organisation and generous hospitality.

23RD JUNE

World Producers Summit in Cannes- summary, action points and photos

Over 100 representatives of production companies, from 26 countries attended- and at 9am in the morning- shows how important the WPS has become to production companies worldwide.

The fact we get together and share information demonstrates our pride in our business and determination that it will prosper- and in doing so benefit agencies and advertisers who rely upon the expertise of production companies.

This year the focus was on the Universal Production Principles document (attached), which we launched at last year's WPS.

The document is a tool for every producers association and production company, to show in negotiations with agencies and advertisers that there are universally recognised good practices- and why- to the benefit of the process and the end product- the commercial.

Several producers/producers associations present reported that they had used the Universal Principles to help agencies and advertisers in their market understand why they should, for example have a maximum of three bids, upfront payments of 50-75%, fixed bid or cost plus (but not an amalgam of the two).

However, there is still much work to do- producers associations and production companies who have not done so yet are encouraged to spread the word, to use the document in their own country, explain it to their clients and  to translate it if necessary (and share the translated document with us). If we all shout about the Universal Principles, we have the best prospect of their becoming just that- universal principles.

We discussed  key issues such as payment terms and in house production. For the first time some agency producers were invited so we could learn their perspective. Their view was that production companies would always be able to negotiate sensible payment terms and prosper despite in house production provided the talent that agencies and advertisers needed was available only through the production company.

We want to continue discussions in between summits and we have created a discussion forum; the CFPE Discussion Platform. It is a private forum so if you would like to participate- even just to read what others have said but hopefully to participate to a lively discussion, please click ‘join group’, your request will be approved ASAP.

You can see photos from the WPS here.

Why Procurement has the wrong approach to production

APA Chief Executive Steve Davies explains why clients get the best value by analysing the ultra competitive production market to compete for their work on quality and price, ensuring their advertising realises its full potential and that the shortcuts to saving money from procurement are counterproductive. World Producers Summit in Cannes

The World Producers Summit in Cannes, which is organised by the CFPE in partnership with the AICP and APA, is now in its ninth year. It is a unique opportunity to bring production company owners around the world together to share intelligence on issues (and opportunities) we face and be better prepared to face them.

This year, we have two firsts: we are organising the WPS as a breakfast- 9am Wednesday 18th June 2014 (at Le Rooftop on the Croisette in Cannes)- rather than a lunch and we are inviting agency producers too. Previously the WPS has been solely about intelligence sharing but this year there will be a dialogue with agency producers too because we developed the ten universal principles of commercials production last year and want the thoughts of agency producers on them too, as we seek to make them universal in application.

We believe that will benefit production companies, agencies and advertisers as a firm foundation on which commercials should be produced, which will enable all three to focus on the critical goal of making each commercial as good as it can be.

Space is limited, if you are interested to join us, please let us know by the 12th June 2014 by emailing us on [email protected] We will confirm your RSVP depending on the availability.

Paris meeting agrees new CFPE strategies

Following the publication of the CFPE survey (article below) and the identification of the goal and strategies that will take the CFPE forward (see About), we had virtually every European country making up the CFPE represented for our special meeting in Paris to discuss how to implement the survey findings.

Present were:

Francois Chilot
Steve Davies
Manfred Vogelsanger
Mikis Modiano
Rudi Haller
Ender Sevim
Ari Laitinen
jan Kallista
Indre Petrukaitiene
Vuk Marjanovic
Bea Catteeuw
Tatianna Pierre
Alexis Bensa
Chad Muserlian
Monique Gerritsen

To ensure the CFPE achieves its goal, we have a range of strategies but the key is active involvement by all associations. To achieve that every CFPE association will involve itself in an online forum, either using the existing Facebook page or if there is sufficient demand a bespoke forum, to enable CFPE association and the production companies that are their members to discuss production issues. To join CFP-e Discussion Forum, please send your Facebook request by following THIS link.

We will also develop an online showcase for the best commercials from around Europe, again focussing on a simple but effective means of showcasing them, which could be via the CFPE Facebook page or some other means.

20TH MAY

CFPE Survey Report

The aim of the survey and the report are to identify the purpose of the CFPE, as any organisation can only succeed if its purpose is clear to all its members and strategies are agreed for the purpose of achieving the purpose identified.

It sets out what each country responding answered and an action plan to which, if we all commit, will enable the CFPE to achieve its objectives and in doing so, provide maximum value to each national association and the production companies that makes up its members.

The survey results will form the basis of our first agenda item at our meeting on Friday in Paris, so please take the time to consider the report prior to that meeting.

World Producers Summit in Cannes brings together producers from 29 countries

The World Producers Summit in Cannes, which is organised by the CFPE in partnership with the AICP and APA, is now in its eight year. This year's meeting (Cannes 19th June) focussed on the launch of the Universal Principles of Engagement of a commercials production company, as detailed below (with a link to the PDF of the Universal Principles).

This is the first time that producers associations have created a policy together and an important moment for the commercials production industry, in creating universal principles which can be applied to any market. We believe that these principles will benefit advertisers, agencies and production companies in ensuring a solid foundation for commercials production, allowing all three parties to focus on the critical goal of making the commercial as good as it can be.

We also shared information about the most pressing issues facing commercial production companies, so that all delegates could leave better informed about critical issues and, in the case of the producers associations present, information they can share with production companies in their own countries.

The WPS also hosted the launch of the new Latin American producers association, ALAP.Congratulations to the producers associations of Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru on coming together to form an association for a region of rapidly growing global impact.

Universal Principles of Engagement of commercials production companies launched in Cannes

Attached are the Universal Principles of Engagement of commercials production companies, which we launched at the World Producers Summit in Cannes.

This is a document we have created in partnership with the APA and the American producers association, the AICP, which has now been endorsed by producers associations around the world- see the document for the full list, which includes every CFPE member association and the producers associations of Latin America and India.

The Universal Principles document is of practical use to all European production companies and to every CFPE association in assisting them. They show that in seeking to contract in writing, ensure that a substantial part of the budget- 50% to 75%- is paid up front to meet a significant part of the expenditure the production company is making to create the commercial and clear and fair cancellation provisions etc are recognised as being part of the foundation of good commercials production and, in doing so, are an aid in persuading an agency or advertiser that they should contract on that basis.

We believe that working to the Universal Principles is to the benefit of agencies and advertisers, as well as production companies, because having clarity as to what is being produced and having a clear and fair contractual framework is the best foundation for the production of the commercial which best realises the advertisers objectives
